Who may be able to join

  • Adults between the ages of 50 and 80.
  • People who are able to give their informed consent to take part in research assessment and treatment.
  • People experiencing significant depression, with a score of 7 or higher on a standard depression questionnaire called the PHQ-9 (indicating mild to moderate symptoms).
  • People who score 23 or above on a standard memory and thinking test called the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE).
  • People who are either not taking antidepressants, or who have been on a stable antidepressant dose for at least 8 weeks and do not plan to change that dose during the next 10 weeks, and who are not receiving individual talk therapy during the study period.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have a current plan or intention to end their life in the near future.
  • People who are unable to communicate in English.
  • People who have been diagnosed with certain mental health conditions other than depression (without psychotic features), generalised anxiety disorder, specific phobia, or antisocial or borderline personality disorder (confirm with trial site).
  • People who have a neurological condition such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, or certain types of mild cognitive impairment.
  • People who have had a serious or severe physical health illness in the past 3 months — such as advanced cancer, multiple sclerosis, major heart, liver or kidney failure, a recent stroke or heart attack, major surgery, or severe lung disease — that may be causing the depression, affecting the brain, or making it difficult to take part in the study.
  • For the MRI part of the study only: People who have a cardiac pacemaker, heart valve replacement, vascular stent, insulin pump, cochlear implant, any other metal medical implant that is not compatible with MRI scanning, or who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces).
