- People who are on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) through a tube in their airway, have been on it for at least 24 hours, and are being prepared for a test to see if they can breathe on their own
- People whose level of alertness and calmness falls within a specific range — not too deeply sedated and not agitated (confirm with trial site)
- People considered at higher risk of needing to be put back on the breathing machine, due to at least one of the following: a heart condition (such as weak heart pump function, known blocked heart arteries, long-term irregular heartbeat, or a history of fluid build-up in the lungs caused by heart problems), or a lung condition (such as COPD, emphysema, widened airways, asthma, breathing problems related to obesity, or a condition that limits how much the lungs can expand)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who had a neuromuscular condition (such as myasthenia gravis or a similar muscle or nerve disorder) before their hospital admission
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have already been enrolled in this study
- People who are under legal guardianship or a similar form of legal protection
- People who are under court-ordered legal protection
- People who are not enrolled in a social security (health insurance) scheme
