Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who were admitted to hospital within 48 hours of their stroke symptoms starting, where a CT or MRI scan has confirmed they had a stroke (either a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain)
- People whose stroke has been rated as moderate to severe, based on a standard medical scoring system that measures stroke severity (a score of 5 or higher on a scale called the NIHSS)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a previous brain injury in a specific area of the brain, such as a prior stroke, brain surgery, or a traumatic brain injury
- People whose brain problems are caused by a condition other than stroke, such as a brain tumour, epilepsy, or Parkinson's disease
- People whose diagnosis is a transient ischemic attack (sometimes called a "mini-stroke") or a specific type of brain bleed called a subarachnoid haemorrhage
- People with a history of heart conditions, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, serious irregular heartbeat, heart defects present from birth, previous heart surgery, heart valve problems, or unexplained significant heart symptoms
- People with certain ongoing health conditions, including severe kidney disease, autoimmune disorders, or serious infections
- People with a history of dementia, depression, or other mental health conditions
- People who are unlikely to be able to attend follow-up appointments or cooperate with the study requirements
