Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 19 years or older who have been admitted to a cardiology ward with acute heart failure
- People whose blood test shows a protein called NT-proBNP above 300 pg/mL, which is a marker of heart stress
- People where the treating doctor suspects a possible respiratory viral infection, based on signs such as a fever above 38°C, a cough, other breathing-related symptoms, mucus, chest x-ray findings, or an elevated inflammation marker in the blood (CRP above 5 mg/dL)
- People who have had a nose or throat swab tested for respiratory viruses within 72 hours of being admitted to hospital, for any of the three reasons above
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose acute heart failure has a clear other identifiable cause, such as a heart attack, a dangerously slow heart rate needing a pacemaker, uncontrolled fast heart rate, severely uncontrolled high blood pressure, very low haemoglobin (a measure of red blood cells) below 7 g/dL, or heart failure triggered by not taking prescribed medications
- People whose fluid on the lungs is mainly caused by a worsening of chronic kidney disease
- People who have another clear source of infection that better explains their fever
