Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who have sudden hearing loss in one ear only, where the hearing loss developed within 72 hours and has been present for 14 days or less
- People whose hearing in the affected ear, measured across specific sound frequencies, shows a significant loss (over 50 decibels on a standard hearing test)
- People whose affected ear measures at least 30 decibels worse than their healthy ear across three sound frequencies
- People whose hearing was normal and even on both sides before the hearing loss began, based on their own account
- People who, if they have already used steroid medication, have taken it for fewer than 10 days
- People whose balance and coordination checks come back as normal
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had ear surgery in the past, other than a procedure to insert a ventilation (ear) tube
- People with a history of previous hearing loss, hearing that fluctuates, Ménière's disease, long-term ear infections, a skin cyst in the ear (cholesteatoma), or a condition causing abnormal bone growth in the ear (otosclerosis)
- People under 18 or over 80 years of age
- People who have experienced a physical injury or pressure-related injury to the ear (such as from diving or an explosion)
- People where scans or examination findings show a structural cause or a problem behind the cochlea that explains the hearing loss
- People with any of the following conditions or treatment histories: tuberculosis (active or being treated to prevent it), diabetes, rheumatological (autoimmune joint or tissue) conditions, atherosclerotic (artery-hardening) disease, serious psychiatric conditions, current chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immune-suppressing treatment, pancreatitis, HIV, hepatitis B or C, chronic kidney failure, substance abuse, active cold sore or herpes outbreaks, severe osteoporosis, hearing loss that occurred within 4 weeks of having a general anaesthetic, or a history of head or neck cancer
