Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis
- People who are 60 years of age or older
- People who are scheduled to have a total knee replacement on one knee for osteoarthritis
- People who have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently taking any medication to help with sleep
- People who have already completed a structured talking therapy program specifically for insomnia (called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia)
- People who have used bright light therapy or negative ion therapy in the past year
- People who have an inflammatory joint or rheumatic disease, or a seizure disorder
- People who have a serious mental health condition, Bipolar I disorder, or a problem with substance or alcohol use
- People who have a serious sleep disorder or body clock (circadian rhythm) disorder, or untreated sleep apnea
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who have a known condition affecting the retina (the back of the eye)
- People who have had eye surgery (though Lasik or cataract surgery performed more than 3 months ago may be acceptable — confirm with trial site)
- People who are taking medications that modify how the immune system responds to rheumatic disease
- People who are taking medications that increase sensitivity to light
- People who are not willing to stop taking over-the-counter sleep aids, such as melatonin, for at least 2 weeks before enrolling in the trial
