Elevated Lp(a) group:
- Men or women aged 50 or older
- People with an Lp(a) blood level of 150 nmol/L or higher
- People who were identified through a family screening programme for high Lp(a) levels at the Amsterdam UMC Vascular Medicine outpatient clinic
- People who are willing and able to give formal consent to take part
- People who are able to follow the study requirements throughout the trial
Low Lp(a) group:
- Men or women aged 50 or older
- People with an Lp(a) blood level below 50 nmol/L
- People who were identified through a family screening programme for Lp(a) levels at the Amsterdam UMC Vascular Medicine outpatient clinic
- People who are willing and able to give formal consent to take part
- People who are able to follow the study requirements throughout the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People with significantly reduced kidney function (an eGFR below 30 ml/min)
- People with a history of heart or blood vessel disease caused by hardening of the arteries — including heart attack, chest pain conditions, stroke, mini-stroke, blocked arteries requiring surgery, or aortic aneurysm
- People with a history of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm condition)
- People who have used or are currently using statin medications (a common type of cholesterol-lowering medicine)
- People with any other medical condition or treatment that the trial doctor believes could affect the study results (confirm with trial site)
- People who are unwilling or unable to give formal consent to take part
- People who are unable to follow the study requirements
