Who may be able to join

  • The main reason for being admitted to hospital is a current episode of depression (without psychosis)
  • Currently staying as an inpatient on the MUSC Senior Care Unit

Who may not be able to join

  • People who have ever used bright light therapy before
  • People whose main reason for hospitalisation is a condition other than major depressive disorder, as determined by their treating team
  • People who have a medical condition that makes them sensitive to light, or who are currently taking medications that cause light sensitivity — including anyone who has ever been advised by a doctor to avoid sunlight because of their medication or a medical condition
  • People who are receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or whose condition worsens during the trial to the point where their treatment team recommends ECT
  • People who have headaches that are not well controlled, or who have had any migraines in the past month
  • People who have been diagnosed with a major neurocognitive disorder (such as severe dementia)
  • People who have a severe intellectual disability
  • People who are not able to provide informed consent to participate in the study
  • People who are currently experiencing active psychosis
  • People who are currently incarcerated
