Who may be able to join
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are alert and responsive enough to open their eyes on their own or when spoken to, and can follow simple movement instructions (as measured by a standard medical alertness scale called the Glasgow Coma Scale, with a score of 13–15)
- People who have had a tracheostomy (a breathing tube surgically placed in the throat) for at least 24 hours, with no complications such as bleeding, pain, air trapped under the skin, a collapsed lung, or infection
- People who are being gradually taken off ventilator (breathing machine) support, following their hospital's respiratory care standards, and who are able to practise breathing on their own during the day
- People whose ventilator is set to deliver 40% oxygen concentration or less
- People with stable vital signs, meaning: a heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute, a breathing rate between 12 and 20 breaths per minute, a top blood pressure reading below 150 and a bottom reading below 90, and blood oxygen levels between 95–100% with no feeling of breathlessness
- People with a calm and alert state of mind, as measured by a standard scale (RASS score between -1 and +1)
- People who are able to communicate in Mandarin, Taiwanese, or Hakka
- People who are willing to take part in the study
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have recently had surgery, anaesthesia, or sedative medications that may be affecting their level of consciousness
- People with severely unstable vital signs or who are unable to breathe normally
- People with a blockage in their upper airway or paralysis of the vocal cords
- People who are highly dependent on a breathing machine or who require high levels of oxygen
- People who have a history of depression or who are currently taking antidepressant medication
