- People who are scheduled to have planned, non-emergency heart bypass surgery (CABG) for the first time, with no other heart procedures planned at the same time
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People whose surgery is at least two weeks away at the time of joining

- People who have had unstable chest pain or a heart attack in the last two weeks

- People who have serious irregular heart rhythms
- People who have bone or nerve conditions that would prevent them from doing exercise as part of the program
- People who are unable to take part in the pre-surgery exercise and preparation program due to physical limitations
- People whose thinking or memory difficulties would prevent them from taking part in the preparation program
- People with very severe heart failure (the most advanced stage, where symptoms occur even at rest)
- People who do not have the mental capacity to agree to take part
