Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children between 4 and 10 years old
- Children who need their tonsils removed because of repeated throat infections — specifically, at least 7 episodes in the past year, or at least 5 episodes per year for 2 years, or at least 3 episodes per year for 3 years
- Children who need their tonsils removed because of long-term tonsil problems causing sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep), difficulty swallowing, or problems with speech
- Children having their tonsils removed using the "cold dissection" surgical method only
- Children who are in generally good health or have only a mild health condition, as assessed by the anaesthesia team
Who may not be able to join:
- Children younger than 4 or older than 10 years old
- Children who need their tonsils removed for reasons other than ongoing tonsil infections, such as lymphoma (a type of cancer)
- Children who take steroid medication on a long-term basis
- Children whose blood haemoglobin level is below 10 gm/dL (a measure of whether there is enough iron-carrying protein in the blood — confirm with trial site)
- Children who currently have an active infection in their nose, throat, or airways, or have acute tonsillitis at the time of the study
- Children with serious health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, or other life-threatening medical conditions, as assessed by the anaesthesia team
- Children who have been regularly taking pain relief medication within one week before their surgery
