Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who have a known chronic liver disease
- People who have been diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (a type of primary liver cancer) — either confirmed by imaging scans or tissue testing — and whose doctors have planned surgery or a local procedure to try to remove or destroy the cancer with the aim of curing it
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had, or currently have, severe liver cirrhosis with serious complications such as fluid build-up in the abdomen, bleeding from enlarged blood vessels in the food pipe, confusion caused by liver failure, or kidney failure related to liver disease (note: people with moderate cirrhosis who have not had these complications are not automatically excluded — confirm with trial site)
- People whose current liver cancer is a return of a previously treated liver cancer, or a second new liver cancer after having had one before
- People whose liver tumour did not originally start in the liver — for example, a cancer that spread to the liver from another part of the body
- People who have previously had a liver transplant, or whose planned treatment for their liver cancer is a liver transplant
- People who do not have a spleen, or who have had their spleen surgically removed
- People for whom a camera examination of the upper digestive tract (a procedure looking at the food pipe, stomach, and upper small intestine) would be unsafe or not possible (confirm with trial site)
- People with a serious illness where life expectancy is estimated to be less than 6 months
- People who are pregnant
- People who are not able to give, or who decline to give, informed consent to participate
