Who may be able to join

  • Women aged 18 or older who have one or more large calcium deposits (macrocalcifications) found in a standard 2D or 3D mammogram.
  • Women aged 18 or older who have one or more large calcium deposits located near a cyst or other clearly identifiable feature visible on an ultrasound image.

Who may not be able to join

  • People under the age of 18 are excluded when ultrasound imaging is being used.
  • People under the age of 18 are excluded when ultrasound imaging combined with light (called optoacoustic imaging) is being used.
  • People who are currently pregnant are excluded when optoacoustic imaging is being used.
  • People who have open sores, insect bites, rash, poison ivy irritation, or chafing on the skin of the breast being examined are excluded when optoacoustic imaging is being used.
  • People who are currently taking, or have taken within the last 72 hours, certain medications that increase sensitivity to light — such as sulfonamides, ampicillin, or tetracycline — and who are experiencing light sensitivity as a result, are excluded when optoacoustic imaging is being used.
  • People who are currently undergoing phototherapy (a treatment that uses light) are excluded when optoacoustic imaging is being used.
  • People who have a history of a condition that causes sensitivity to light (such as porphyria or lupus) or who are being treated for such a condition and are currently experiencing light sensitivity are excluded when optoacoustic imaging is being used.
