Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with chronic pain (patient group):

  • You have been diagnosed with chronic widespread pain or fibromyalgia
  • You are between 18 and 70 years old
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or below
  • You experience pain on both sides of your body, above and below your waist, and in your back or spine area, and this pain has lasted for 3 months or longer
  • Any pain medications you take have stayed the same for at least 1 month before joining the study

For healthy volunteers (control group):

  • You are between 18 and 70 years old
  • Your BMI is 35 or below
  • You do not have any long-term health conditions, such as chronic pain or diabetes

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are currently pregnant or have been pregnant in the last 12 months
  • You have a medical reason that means you cannot safely receive non-invasive brain stimulation (a type of treatment applied to the outside of the head) — (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a history of a neurological condition, such as epilepsy (including a family history), a brain injury, stroke, dementia, or Parkinson's disease
  • You have a serious medical condition such as cancer, heart problems (for example, heart attack, heart failure, or irregular heartbeat), uncontrolled high blood pressure, or hormonal, kidney, or reproductive system disorders
  • You currently misuse alcohol or drugs
  • You have a psychiatric or mental health condition other than depression or anxiety
