Who may be able to join
- People who have been diagnosed with either "Possible Alzheimer's Disease" or "Probable Alzheimer's Disease" according to the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) guidelines.
- People who have sleep problems, shown by either a score above five on a standard sleep quality questionnaire (called the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), or a score above four on a sleep-related section of a behaviour assessment completed by a caregiver (called the Neuropsychiatric Inventory).
- People who are living in the community and attend psychiatric outpatient clinics, or take part in activities at dementia care centres or day care centres.
- People for whom informed consent has been obtained before joining — if the person's memory or thinking difficulties make it hard for them to sign consent themselves, a primary caregiver (who may also be a legal or professional representative) may provide consent on their behalf.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People with severe cataracts that significantly affect their sensitivity to light.
- People with a physical condition (such as a wrist disability) that would prevent them from wearing a small wrist-worn movement monitor.
- People who have had brain lesions or brain surgery that has permanently damaged the parts of the brain that control the body's daily rhythm (such as tumours affecting the suprachiasmatic nucleus or pineal gland).
- People who have any other condition that the treating doctor considers unsuitable for participation, including people currently experiencing acute delirium or those suffering from a respiratory infection such as COVID-19.
- For people taking part in Phase II of the trial specifically: people with significant skin conditions on the head, or conditions that could affect how well light therapy works — including haemangiomas, scleroderma, psoriasis, rashes, open wounds, or tattoos on the head — will not be eligible to participate, nor will people who have head implants or who have received photosensitising drug treatments within the two weeks before joining the trial (confirm with trial site).
