Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between the ages of 18 and 80 who had a full heart ultrasound (echocardiogram) at UPMC Presbyterian Echocardiography Lab, referred because of a suspected stroke
- People who have been formally diagnosed with a stroke by a specialist stroke doctor
- People whose heart was confirmed to be in a normal, regular rhythm at the time of their referral
- People whose heart ultrasound images were clear enough to allow detailed heart muscle movement (strain) measurements
- People whose medical follow-up records are available to track outcomes such as whether a stroke happened again, whether an irregular heart rhythm developed, or other health events
- People from partner medical centres may also be included, provided their de-identified ultrasound and clinical data meet the above criteria
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose heart ultrasound was incomplete or too technically difficult to use
- People under 18 years of age
- People who had already been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) before their heart ultrasound was done
- People with significant heart structural problems, such as serious narrowing or leaking of the mitral heart valve, artificial heart valves, devices placed in the upper left chamber of the heart, or holes between the upper chambers of the heart
- People with a medical condition that makes their blood more likely to clot than normal, such as certain cancers, blood disorders, or a condition called antiphospholipid antibody syndrome
- People without enough follow-up medical records to track the study outcomes — unless their death has been formally documented
- People whose heart ultrasound images were not clear enough to allow reliable strain measurements
