Who might be able to join this trial:

This trial has three groups. The criteria differ slightly between groups, as outlined below.

All three groups require:

  • Being between 20 and 60 years of age
  • Having hearing test results in the normal range across key frequencies (confirmed by a standard tone hearing test)
  • Scoring 21 or above on a standard thinking and memory assessment called the MoCA test
  • Having no emotional or neurological conditions that could interfere with the study tests

Control group (no tinnitus): People with no tinnitus or hearing complaints may be eligible for this group

First study group (tinnitus): People who have had tinnitus — a ringing, buzzing, or similar sound in the ears — for 3 months or longer may be eligible for this group

Second study group (speech perception difficulties): People with no tinnitus, but who score below a certain threshold on a standardised questionnaire measuring how well they perceive speech in everyday situations, may be eligible for this group

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with hearing loss, whether related to the ear itself or to the brain's processing of sound
  • People whose tinnitus is caused or worsened by physical movements or pressure (known as somatosensory tinnitus)
  • People with emotional or neurological conditions that could interfere with the study tests
