Who may and may not be able to join

AI generated eligibility summary. Written by an AI model from the official source data and checked on a sample basis. It can contain mistakes, so confirm anything important against the original source. How we use AI

Who may be able to join

  • Adults receiving care at a university-affiliated dental clinic who are legally able to give consent and are willing to take part voluntarily.
  • People who are able to read and independently fill in short questionnaires before and after their dental visit.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who report a hearing impairment, currently use hearing aids, or have another hearing condition that could make headphone use unsafe or affect the study results.
  • People who have taken sedative medication before their appointment, or who are acutely intoxicated in a way that may affect their anxiety responses.
  • People who have a cognitive impairment or other condition that limits their ability to give informed consent or reliably complete the study questionnaires.
  • People who are unwilling to wear headphones during the procedure if placed in a headphone group, or who do not wish to participate or withdraw their consent at any point.
  • People for whom a clinician judges that wearing headphones is not appropriate for clinical reasons, such as needing uninterrupted verbal communication during the procedure (confirm with trial site).
  • People with a reported history of severe reactions to headphone use, such as significant discomfort or dizziness, or a skin sensitivity that is incompatible with where the headphones make contact.
  • People who are unable to complete the before-and-after questionnaires within the normal clinic visit process, or who are unable to meet basic study procedures.
