Who may be able to join

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who can speak, read, and understand English
  • People who are in generally stable health
  • People who have treatment-resistant depression, meaning they score in the moderate or above range on a standard depression rating scale (called the HDRS) and have tried two or more antidepressant treatments without sufficient success in the last two years

  • People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • People with heart problems, including an abnormal heart tracing (ECG) in the month before screening
  • People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (a long-term lung condition)
  • People with Congenital Long QT Syndrome (an inherited heart rhythm condition)
  • People who weigh 265 pounds (120 kg) or more
  • People with severe obesity, defined as a BMI of 40 or above
  • People with increased pressure in the brain or around the spinal cord
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People with an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • People who have previously had a bad reaction to ketamine, including an allergic reaction
  • People experiencing symptoms of psychosis or early warning signs of psychosis
  • People with a severe personality disorder
  • People with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • People with bipolar disorder
  • People with a history of substance abuse, defined as a score of three or more on a standard drug use screening tool (note: prior use of psychedelics is allowed)
  • People who have attempted suicide in the past year, or who are currently having thoughts of suicide with intent to act on them
  • People who are not suitable for MRI scanning, including those with any metal implants, abnormalities of the brain or skull, large tattoos covering significant body areas, or claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
  • People taking medications that may interact with ketamine — a full review of each person's current medications will be carried out by the trial site before admission (confirm with trial site for specific medications)
