Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who have had ongoing low back pain for at least 3 months, confirmed through medical history and physical examination
- People who have a tight, rope-like band or knot that can be felt within a muscle
- People who have a highly sensitive, tender spot within that tight muscle band
- People whose current pain is reproduced when pressure is applied to that tender knot or tight band
- People who experience pain when the affected muscle is stretched to its full range of movement
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have a medical reason that makes having an MRI scan unsafe, or who have severe claustrophobia that would prevent them from completing the scan
- People who have received treatment to the area being studied within the past 3 months
- People who have had a serious back injury (such as a broken bone) or back surgery in the past
- People who have a neurological condition or an ongoing systemic illness — such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, cancer, or rheumatoid arthritis — that affects their ability to feel pain or sensation
- People who have severe osteoarthritis
- People who have skin injuries in the area that would be treated
- People who are unable to give informed consent to participate
