Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), from any cause, and are seriously ill
- Your blood pressure has dropped to a dangerously low level as a result of a serious infection (sepsis)
- You are between 18 and 65 years old
Who may not be able to join:
- You are already receiving medicines through a drip to raise your blood pressure or support your heart
- You have a serious pre-existing heart or lung condition, such as high blood pressure in the lungs connected to liver disease, known blocked heart arteries, a heart condition you were born with, a faulty or artificial heart valve, or a condition where the heart muscle is enlarged or stiff
- A bedside ultrasound scan of your chest cannot be done properly — for example, because of fluid or air around your left lung, or because your ribs are too close together (confirm with trial site)
- You are actively bleeding, such as from swollen veins in your food pipe (varices)
- You have recently had a stroke or similar brain blood vessel problem
- You have advanced kidney failure or are already on kidney dialysis or a similar kidney support treatment
- You were admitted to intensive care after a liver transplant, severe burns, or heart surgery
- You have previously had a procedure to create a special internal shunt in your liver (called TIPS)
- You have liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You or your family members have declined to give consent to take part
- You currently have an active COVID-19 infection
