Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who have had low back pain as their main ongoing pain problem for at least 3 months, with pain on at least half of all days over the past 6 months
  • People whose average pain level has been 4 or more out of 10 over the past week
  • People who have had trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or who wake too early (more than 30 minutes before they want to), happening at least 3 nights per week for at least 6 months, and where this sleep problem causes noticeable distress or affects daily life (this will be assessed by a phone interview)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently receiving a behavioural therapy or treatment program specifically for insomnia
  • People who already meditate regularly, such as on a weekly basis
  • People whose medications for sleep, pain, or other conditions have changed in the past 3 months
  • People who work shift hours that result in unusually early or late sleep and wake times (for example, normally going to bed outside the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., or waking outside 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.)
  • People with certain mental health conditions that a study interview determines could interfere with taking part safely, or people with other untreated sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea or restless legs syndrome
  • People without regular access to the internet
  • People who are not able to read and speak English, as the study materials are only available in English
  • People with severe difficulties with memory or thinking, as assessed by a short telephone test
  • People who are currently pregnant
  • People who are unable or unwilling to follow the study procedures, or who the principal investigator determines cannot safely take part
