Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are enrolled in, or planning to enrol in, treatment at the COSTAR Intensive Outpatient Program
  • People who can read and communicate in English well enough to take part in the study activities
  • People who have had thoughts of suicide or made a suicide attempt in the past month
  • People who have been experiencing significant sleep problems, such as a high score on a standard sleep quality questionnaire, regularly going to bed after midnight, or having a sleep schedule that varies by more than two hours

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a non-affective psychotic disorder recorded in their medical file or identified during an initial clinical assessment, or whose symptoms or day-to-day functioning would make participation too difficult
  • People for whom either sleep deprivation therapy or bright light therapy would be medically unsafe — for example, those with bipolar disorder, a seizure disorder, or who take medications that increase sensitivity to light
  • People with an intellectual disability that would prevent them from understanding and following the study procedures
  • People with untreated obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome that has not yet been addressed
  • People with a life-threatening medical condition that requires immediate treatment, such as cancer or end-stage disease
  • People who are pregnant
