Who may be able to join
- Adults aged 18 or older.
- People who are scheduled to have planned (non-emergency) surgery to remove breast cancer.
- People who fall into a low-to-moderate health risk category as assessed by their anaesthesia team (known as ASA classification I, II, or III).
- People who fully understand what the study involves and are willing to take part by signing a consent form.
- People whose surgery is expected to require anaesthesia for more than 90 minutes.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have significant problems with their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, or blood clotting before surgery.
- People who are currently taking antipsychotic medications, antidepressants, or steroid medications (glucocorticoids), or who have a history of heavy alcohol use or illegal drug use.
- People who score below 18 on a standard memory and thinking test (called the MMSE), or who have dementia, an intellectual disability, or are unable to communicate due to conditions such as coma, severe dementia, or significant hearing or language difficulties.
- People who have a history of psychiatric or neurological conditions, such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, or severe muscle weakness disorder (severe myasthenia gravis).
- People whose blood pressure is very high and not well controlled, specifically at or above 180/110 mmHg.
- People who have raised pressure inside their skull or eyes.
- People who have an overactive thyroid condition that is untreated or not adequately managed.
- People who have a known allergy to any of the medications used in this study.
- People who are not able to complete the questionnaires and assessments required as part of this study.
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial.
