Who may be able to join

  • People who are older than 18 years old
  • People whose breast cancer has been assessed as stage cT1 or cT2 (an early stage of tumour size — confirm with trial site)
  • People whose lymph nodes near the armpit have been assessed as cN0, meaning no cancer has been detected in those nodes before the operation
  • People who have had a check of the armpit area before surgery that came back negative for cancer spread
  • People whose planned first treatment is breast surgery
  • People who are not having any armpit (axillary) lymph node surgery
  • People who have cancer in more than one spot within the same breast (multifocal or multicentric breast cancer)
  • People who are being considered for breast-conserving surgery (surgery that removes the tumour but keeps most of the breast)
  • People who have signed and dated a written consent form agreeing to take part, alongside the investigator, before being enrolled
  • People who are able to attend follow-up appointments after the study begins

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have cancer that has already spread to distant parts of the body at the time of diagnosis
  • People who have already had any surgery involving the armpit lymph nodes
  • People who have received neoadjuvant treatment (treatment given before surgery to shrink the cancer — confirm with trial site)
  • People who have had a previous cancer diagnosis
  • People who have cancer in both breasts at the same time
  • People who have already received primary systemic therapy (such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy given before surgery — confirm with trial site)
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People whose armpit lymph nodes were found to contain cancer cells through a biopsy or cell sample taken before surgery
  • People whose pre-surgery scans or imaging showed signs of cancer in multiple armpit lymph nodes
  • People who have a psychiatric condition, addiction, or any other condition that affects their ability to give informed consent to participate
