Who may be able to join
- People between 40 and 60 years of age.
- People who are in or around the menopause transition, which includes the following stages: early menopause transition (menstrual cycles becoming noticeably irregular, with periods arriving 7 or more days earlier or later than expected, and this pattern repeating); late menopause transition (having gone 60 days or more without a period); the point of final menstrual period (having gone 12 months in a row without a period, for reasons unrelated to other medical conditions); early post-menopause (within 5 to 8 years after the final menstrual period); or late post-menopause (more than 8 years after the final menstrual period).
- People who experience frequent hot flashes, meaning at least once per day.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People with certain medical conditions that could overlap with or resemble menopause symptoms, such as primary ovarian insufficiency, thyroid disease (overactive or underactive thyroid), high prolactin levels, Cushing's syndrome, cancer of the endometrium or ovaries, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or a condition called functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (where periods stop due to factors like stress or low body weight).
- People currently taking certain medications, including GnRH agonists or antagonists (hormone-suppressing drugs), tamoxifen, or aromatase inhibitors (drugs often used in breast cancer treatment).
- People with a recent bruise or blood pooling under the skin that occurred less than 48 hours ago.
- People with a history of bleeding or clotting disorders, including certain platelet disorders (such as ITP, TTP, HUS, or Glanzmann thrombasthenia) or haemophilia A or B.
- People with a history of poor blood flow to the arteries.
- People with any prior history of cancer (of any kind).
- People who are currently pregnant.
- People with a lifelong history of severe, uncontrolled mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder.
- People with psychotic disorders, other neurological conditions, or heart disease.
- People with any condition that would prevent them from completing the tasks required in the study (confirm with trial site).
- People who have tattoos on the areas of the body where sensory testing would be performed (confirm with trial site).
