Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older
- People who have been diagnosed with severe, end-stage heart failure that has not responded to the best available medical treatments
- People who are already scheduled to have a heart pump device (called an LVAD) implanted as part of their normal medical care
- People who are able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part and allow tissue and blood samples to be collected
- People who are willing and able to follow the study procedures and attend long-term follow-up appointments
- People from whose LVAD surgery a small sample of heart muscle tissue will be available for research
- People who have blood samples available that were collected during routine clinical care
- People receiving care at one of the hospitals or centres participating in this study
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age
- People who have previously had a long-term mechanical heart support device implanted
- People who are having a heart transplant at the same time as the LVAD surgery
- People who have a heart condition present from birth that requires complex surgical repair
- People who have an active widespread infection or sepsis at the time of the LVAD surgery
- People with a known active cancer where life expectancy is estimated at less than one year
- People with serious non-heart-related health conditions that limit expected survival to less than one year (for example, advanced liver failure or severe kidney disease where kidney replacement therapy is not considered a treatment option by the treating team)
- People who are unable or unwilling to provide signed consent to participate
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of enrolment
- People whose heart tissue or blood samples are not of sufficient quantity or quality to be used in the planned research analyses
