  • People who have an active infection affecting the whole body
  • People with abnormally high or low platelet counts in their blood
  • People with a known pre-existing paralysis of one side of the diaphragm (the muscle used for breathing)
  • People with an untreated or uncontrolled overactive or underactive thyroid gland
  • People whose immune system is weakened or who are considered by their doctor to be at high risk of infection
  • People with a currently active cancer, or who have previously received chemotherapy or radiation treatment
  • People who have previously had a left atrial ablation procedure or any surgical procedure on the left side of the heart, including left atrial appendage closure
  • People who have had heart surgery, a heart attack, or a procedure to open or stent a coronary artery within the 3 months before eligibility is assessed
  • People with unstable angina (chest pain that is unpredictable or occurs at rest)
  • People with primary pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs not caused by another condition)
  • People who have a medical reason that makes long-term blood-thinning medication unsuitable for them
  • People who have had a stroke or mini-stroke (TIA) within the 3 months before the consent date
  • People who have an artificial heart valve
  • People whose left atrial chamber measures more than 55mm on an ultrasound of the heart
  • People who have pulmonary vein stents already in place
  • People who have a significant narrowing (70% or more) of any pulmonary vein, identified by CT or MRI scan
  • People with an infection or inflammation of the heart lining or surrounding sac, or fluid around the heart
  • People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or of childbearing potential and not using adequate contraception
  • People with a current substance abuse problem
  • People who are unwilling to follow the study protocol or attend follow-up visits
