Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 50 and 85 years old (any gender)
- You have been diagnosed with age-related hearing loss, meaning your hearing has slowly gotten worse over time, mainly affecting your ability to hear higher-pitched sounds and understand speech
- Your better ear has moderate to severe hearing loss, measured within a specific range on a standard hearing test (PTA between 35–79 dB based on 2021 WHO standards)
- If applying for the hearing aid group: you have been wearing hearing aids for more than 6 months and wear them for more than 7.2 hours each day
- You are a Chinese national who can complete all assessments in Chinese
- You are right-handed
- You have had at least 6 years of education
- You are willing to give your consent to participate and do not plan to move away within the next year
Who may not be able to join:
- Your hearing loss is caused by something other than aging, such as loud noise exposure, genetics, or medication side effects
- You have a history of brain or nervous system conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, or a serious brain injury
- You have been diagnosed with dementia or another condition affecting brain function that could make it hard to follow the study's requirements
- You have a major neurological disorder, a serious long-term physical illness, a family history of an inherited condition, or a major mental health condition
- You have a reason why you cannot safely have an MRI scan (confirm with trial site)
- You have a reason why you cannot safely receive a treatment called rTMS, which uses magnetic pulses near the head (confirm with trial site)
