Who might be able to join this trial:

- People who are scheduled for planned (non-emergency) heart surgery that requires the use of a heart-lung bypass machine.
- People who have given written consent to take part in the trial.
- People whose planned surgery falls into one of these categories: mitral valve replacement or repair, aortic valve replacement or repair, coronary artery bypass grafting (a procedure to improve blood flow to the heart), combined valve and bypass surgery, surgery on more than one heart valve, or surgery on the main artery leaving the heart.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who need emergency heart surgery.
- People who have previously had heart surgery and are having a repeat operation.
- People for whom a specific type of heart imaging using a probe placed in the throat (called TEE) is not safe or suitable.
- People who are already receiving certain medications through a drip to support their heart function before surgery.
- People who are already relying on a mechanical device to help support their heart or circulation before surgery (such as a heart pump or similar device).
- People who require a breathing machine before surgery.
- People who have an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation before surgery.
