Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 80 years of age.
- People scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) heart bypass surgery performed for the first time, using a heart-lung machine, without any other heart procedures done at the same time.
Who may not be able to join:
- People having emergency heart surgery or having heart surgery for a second time (redo surgery).
- People having additional heart procedures at the same time, such as heart valve repair or replacement, or surgery on the main artery from the heart (the aorta).
- People whose surgery is planned to be done, or ends up being done, without the heart-lung machine (known as "off-pump" bypass surgery).
- People whose blood count shows they are significantly anaemic before surgery (low red blood cell levels), or who have a known condition that affects bleeding or clotting.
- People whose heart pumping strength is severely reduced before surgery (confirm with trial site for specific measurement threshold).
- People with a low platelet count (platelets are blood cells that help with clotting) or abnormal blood clotting test results before surgery.
- People taking blood-thinning medications (other than aspirin) or anti-inflammatory medications that have not been stopped for the recommended period of time before surgery, in line with current medical guidelines.
- People taking anticoagulant (clot-preventing) medications that have not been stopped for the recommended period of time before surgery.
- People with severe kidney disease or who are on dialysis, or people with severe liver disease.
- People with an active infection, or an ongoing inflammatory or autoimmune condition.
- People with an active cancer that is currently being treated.
- People who are unwilling or unable to provide written consent to participate.
