Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older
- People who have been admitted to hospital due to a sudden worsening of heart failure
- People whose treating heart specialist has determined that diuretic medication given through a drip (intravenously) is needed
- People whose heart failure is primarily affecting the left side of the heart
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form before taking part
Who may not be able to join:
- People with severely low red blood cell levels (very low haemoglobin)
- People who require kidney dialysis (either haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis) or who are on a waiting list for a kidney transplant
- People with a severe leaking mitral valve (the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart) as the primary problem
- People with a severely narrowed aortic valve
- People with a severely leaking aortic valve
- People with a severe leaking tricuspid valve as the primary problem
- People whose heart failure is primarily affecting the right side of the heart
- People whose heart failure is caused by a heart condition they were born with
- People who have previously had their mitral valve replaced
- People who have previously had their aortic valve replaced
- People who have previously had any biological (tissue-based) heart valve replacement
- People who have previously had a transcatheter aortic valve implantation (a type of minimally invasive valve procedure)
- People with an active cancer diagnosis
- People who are unable or unwilling to sign a written consent form
- People for whom an ultrasound scan of the heart (echocardiogram) cannot be performed before starting intravenous diuretic treatment, for any reason
