Who might be able to join this trial:
- Men between the ages of 40 and 65 who are sexually active
- People assessed as having a high or very high risk of a heart attack or stroke, based on a specific cardiovascular risk scoring tool called SCORE2
- People who have not taken statin medications (cholesterol-lowering drugs) in the past 3 months
- People who do not have a known heart or blood vessel condition that would normally require starting statins at a high dose right away
- People whose other medications, if any, have remained unchanged for the past 3 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are known to be unable to tolerate statin medications
- People with a known condition where the body does not produce enough male hormones (hypogonadism)
- People with a persistent, ongoing form of irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation
- People currently receiving treatment for an active cancer
- People with known long-term inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, certain connective tissue diseases, or a type of liver disease related to metabolism
- People with significantly reduced kidney function or liver function outside of acceptable ranges (confirm with trial site for exact values)
- People with chronic heart failure
- People with a diagnosed mental illness
- People with alcohol dependency or drug addiction
- People who have been regularly taking steroid medications (glucocorticoids) or anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as ibuprofen) for most of the 3 months before joining
- People currently participating in another clinical trial, or who have participated in one within the 30 days before giving consent to join this study
- People who are unable to understand what the study involves or to give their consent to participate
