Who may be able to join
- Children between the ages of 7 and 12 years old
- Children who are scheduled for planned (non-emergency) surgery for a broken bone in the arm, hand, or shoulder area
- Children whose pain relief plan after surgery involves receiving medication every 8 hours (three times a day)
- Children who are alert, clear-headed, and able to communicate and cooperate without difficulty
- Children who are expected to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours in the wards where the study is taking place
- Children and their parents or legal guardians who agree to take part in the study
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- Children who need emergency surgery
- Children who have an open wound, infection, suspected pressure build-up in the muscles (compartment syndrome), or a blood vessel injury at the site of the fracture
- Children who have lost feeling or have nerve-related problems in the affected arm or hand
- Children who have cognitive (thinking or learning), hearing, speech, or severe physical disabilities
- Children whose broken bone is being treated with a cast only, without surgery
- Children whose post-surgery pain relief plan involves medication given more or less often than every 8 hours, or who need very high doses of pain relief medication
- Children who need a second or follow-up surgery
- Children who have a metabolic or neuromuscular condition such as brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta) or a history of repeated fractures
- Children whose mothers are unable to communicate or do not speak Turkish
