Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Healthy adults aged 18–35 years, without any known acute or chronic illness, who are non-smokers, have a body mass index (BMI) between 20 and 24.9, and have a negative result on a standing blood pressure test (orthostatic test)
  • Adults aged 60 or older who have high blood pressure (hypertension) and are being monitored at a hypertension clinic
  • People with controlled high blood pressure and a negative standing blood pressure test, who do not have diabetes
  • People with controlled high blood pressure who show a drop in blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), confirmed by a standing blood pressure test
  • People with controlled high blood pressure who show a rise in blood pressure when standing up, confirmed by a standing blood pressure test
  • People with controlled high blood pressure and diabetes, who have not previously been diagnosed with nerve-related problems affecting automatic body functions (autonomic dysfunction)
  • People who are able to read, understand, and sign a written consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with dementia, a brain or nerve degenerative condition, or any cognitive impairment that would prevent them from understanding what the study involves
  • People with known heart or blood vessel disease, including heart failure of a certain severity, a heart attack in the past 6 months, significant irregular heartbeat, or blocked arteries in the limbs
  • People whose high blood pressure is not currently under control
  • People who have had a change to their blood pressure medications within the past 4 weeks
  • People who have a cardiac pacemaker fitted
  • People currently taking certain heart rhythm medications (class I, III, or IV antiarrhythmics), digoxin, alpha-blocker medications, or other drugs known to significantly affect how the heart's automatic nervous system functions
  • People with severely reduced kidney function or severe liver failure (confirm with trial site for specific test thresholds)
  • People with an active cancer diagnosis
  • People with a BMI of 35 or above
  • People who have had an acute illness within the past 4 weeks
  • People who currently smoke
  • People who are unable to safely ride a stationary exercise bike for testing purposes
  • People with severe psychiatric conditions that are not currently stable with treatment
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who are already participating in another clinical study
  • People who are unwilling or unable to provide written consent
