Who may be able to join
- People who have been diagnosed with breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, confirmed by a tissue or cell sample.
- People who have at least one soft tissue tumour (in or just under the skin) that measures between 1 cm and 5 cm, can be seen on imaging, and can be safely reached for treatment; up to 3 such tumours may be treated.
- People who have received any amount of prior or ongoing cancer treatment, but whose treating doctors agree it is medically safe for them to pause their systemic (whole-body) breast cancer therapy for one week before the procedure and two weeks after.
- People aged 18 years or older.
- People with a general health and activity level rated at 0, 1, or 2 on the ECOG scale, meaning they are able to carry out at least some daily activities (confirm with trial site).
- People whose blood counts meet the required levels: a neutrophil count of at least 1,500 per microlitre and a platelet count of at least 100,000 per microlitre.
- People who are not currently taking blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications, or who are able to safely pause these medications in line with standard radiology procedure guidelines.
- People living with HIV who are on effective treatment and have had an undetectable viral load within the past 6 months, as recorded in their medical file.
- People with chronic hepatitis B who are on treatment and have an undetectable viral load, as recorded in their medical file.
- People with a history of hepatitis C who have been successfully treated and cured, or who are currently on hepatitis C treatment with an undetectable viral load as recorded in their medical file.
- People who have had or currently have another type of cancer, where that cancer or its treatment is not expected to interfere with the safety or results of this trial.
- People of reproductive potential who agree to use adequate contraception (such as hormonal or barrier methods, or abstinence) throughout the study and for 4 weeks after the last treatment, and who agree to inform their treating doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs or is suspected.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have not yet recovered from side effects of prior or current cancer treatment, where those side effects remain above a moderate level (confirm with trial site).
- People who have a pacemaker or any other electronic implanted device.
- People who are unable or unwilling to receive moderate sedation and local anaesthetic, or for whom these are medically unsuitable.
- People who are currently pregnant, due to unknown risks the treatment may pose to a developing baby.
- People who are currently breastfeeding or chestfeeding, due to unknown risks to nursing infants; the trial requires that breastfeeding or chestfeeding be stopped before treatment begins.
- People who have any medical condition or personal circumstance that, in the opinion of the treating investigator, would make it difficult to follow the study procedures.
