Who may be able to join
- People aged between 18 and 85 years.
- People scheduled for a planned major abdominal operation under general anaesthesia, where the surgery is expected to last at least 2 hours and the hospital stay after surgery is expected to be at least 2 days.
- People whose overall health before surgery falls within a low-to-moderate risk range, as assessed by their medical team (known as ASA classification I–III — confirm with trial site if unsure what this means for a specific situation).
Who may not be able to join

- People who have broken skin, redness, swelling, infection, or significant physical differences in the structure of their outer ear.
- People who have an unusually slow resting heart rate (fewer than 50 beats per minute) or a specific type of irregular heart rhythm called third-degree atrioventricular block.
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker or any other active electronic device implanted in their body.
- People with a recorded history of a traumatic brain injury within the past 6 months.
- People who experience ongoing (chronic) pain or who rely on pain-relief medications on a long-term basis.
- People with severe mental health or psychiatric conditions, or who regularly take certain medications such as steroids, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety medicines.
- People with severe difficulties with thinking, memory, or communication that would prevent them from completing the study assessments.
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial that involves a treatment or intervention.
- People who are expected to be transferred directly to an intensive care unit (ICU) straight after their surgery.
