Who may be able to join

  • Women between 18 and 70 years old (inclusive).
  • A tissue examination before surgery has confirmed the breast cancer is either invasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (a very early form of breast cancer).
  • Both physical examination and imaging scans clearly show the cancer is a single lesion that stays within the breast tissue, without spreading to the skin, the tissue just under the skin, the large chest muscle behind the breast, or the nipple and surrounding area.
  • The tumor is located in the inner or outer sections of the breast (based on a specific three-zone classification method used in this trial — confirm with trial site).
  • The tumor measured 3 cm or smaller before surgery, or before any chemotherapy given prior to surgery if that applies.
  • The tumor is more than 2 cm away from the nipple, as measured by physical examination, with MRI and ultrasound used as additional checks.
  • The person has a clear wish to keep their breast and is able to receive standard radiation therapy after the operation.
  • The person has given their informed consent to take part voluntarily.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • The cancer has been assessed by examination or imaging as appearing in multiple spots in the breast, or shows widespread suspicious calcium deposits, large irregular masses with extensions, or cannot be fully removed with clear margins and a good cosmetic result.
  • The edges of the removed tissue keep coming back positive for cancer cells, meaning clean margins cannot be achieved after surgery.
  • The diagnosis is inflammatory breast cancer.
  • The person is pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • There is a previous history of breast cancer surgery on either breast, including cases where cancer has come back after earlier breast-conserving surgery on the same side.
  • There is a known genetic mutation linked to breast cancer, such as a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation.
  • There are serious existing health conditions before surgery that mean the person cannot safely undergo general anaesthesia or the surgical procedure.
  • Any other circumstances that the trial researchers consider make participation unsuitable (confirm with trial site).
