- The tooth that needs to be removed requires a surgical extraction (a more complex removal procedure)
- The permanent tooth developing underneath the baby tooth has not yet finished forming its roots
- The child has a history of a systemic (whole-body) illness, such as heart disease, uncontrolled asthma, epilepsy, or diabetes
- The child is unable to use pain or anxiety rating scales due to a neurological or developmental condition
- The child has a history of an allergic reaction to local anaesthetics or other medicines that would be used in the trial
- The child has a sensitivity to smells or cannot tolerate inhaled substances
- The child or their parent or guardian does not wish to participate
