Normal Hearing Group
- People who have given voluntary written consent before any screening takes place (or whose legal representative has done so)
- People who are at least 18 years old at the time of signing the consent form
- People whose hearing test results show sound is heard at normal levels (at or below 15dB) across all tested frequencies, with no difference between air and bone hearing, and a normal eardrum pressure test result (called Jerger Type A)
Conductive Hearing Loss Group
- People who have given voluntary written consent before any screening takes place (or whose legal representative has done so)
- People who are at least 18 years old at the time of signing the consent form
- People whose bone-conduction hearing test shows hearing at or below 20dB across all frequencies, with some exceptions allowed for age-related hearing loss in higher frequencies or a specific dip in hearing around 2kHz, and where there is a measurable gap between air and bone hearing at one or more frequencies
Cochlear Implant Recipients Group
- People who have given voluntary written consent before any screening takes place (or whose legal representative has done so)
- People who are at least 18 years old at the time of signing the consent form
- People whose ear is already planned for cochlear implant surgery by their ear, nose, and throat surgeon
- People whose eardrum pressure test result is normal (Jerger Type A)
Who may not be able to join:
Normal Hearing Group
- People with a significant history of middle ear disease
- People who have had middle ear surgery in the past
- People whose ear examination shows a hole in the eardrum or fluid behind the eardrum
- People with a severe outer ear infection or a blocked ear canal
- People currently taking part in another clinical trial involving an experimental medicine or device
Conductive Hearing Loss Group
- People who have had middle ear surgery in the past
- People whose ear examination shows a hole in the eardrum or fluid behind the eardrum
- People whose ear shows signs of growths, cysts, or a condition called cholesteatoma (a skin growth in the middle ear)
- People with a severe outer ear infection or a blocked ear canal
- People currently taking part in another clinical trial involving an experimental medicine or device
Cochlear Implant Recipients Group
- People whose ear has a significant history of middle ear disease
- People whose ear has had middle ear surgery in the past
- People whose ear examination shows a hole in the eardrum or fluid behind the eardrum
- People with a severe outer ear infection or a blocked ear canal
