Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged between 18 and 70 years
• People who have been diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (a type of unexplained hearing loss that came on within 72 hours and met specific hearing test thresholds)
• People whose hearing loss affects one ear only, and who had equal hearing in both ears before this episode started (either by their own account or confirmed by a previous hearing test)
• People whose symptoms started no more than 14 days before enrolling in the trial
• People who are alert, can understand questions clearly, and are able to complete assessments
• People who agree to take part and sign a written consent form

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose hearing loss has a clearly identified cause found during examination, such as a nerve tumour near the ear (acoustic neuroma), stroke, head injury, or certain nerve-related conditions
• People who had any previous hearing problems or balance problems in the affected ear before this episode, including past sudden hearing loss, certain types of migraine, Meniere's disease, positional vertigo, or hearing loss present from birth or caused by inherited conditions, syphilis, or a bone condition in the ear
• People who have conditions where steroid medicines taken throughout the body are generally not recommended — for example, poorly controlled or insulin-dependent diabetes, a history of stomach ulcers, active infection or tuberculosis, a history of hepatitis B or C, pancreas problems, severe bone thinning (osteoporosis), or bone tissue loss (osteonecrosis)
• People who have already received 10 or more days of steroid treatment (either throughout the body or locally in the ear) before enrolling
• People who have other conditions — such as severe skin disorders — that would prevent them from completing acupuncture treatment
• People who have serious problems with major organ function
• People who have had acupuncture treatment at any point in the past 12 months
• People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People the trial investigator considers unsuitable for other reasons, such as difficulty attending follow-up appointments or concerns about not being able to follow the study requirements
