Who may be able to join

  • People who are willing to take part in the study and sign a consent form agreeing to participate.
  • People who are aged 70 or older at the time of signing the consent form.
  • People who are generally able to carry out daily activities with little or no limitation, and who are expected to live for more than 3 months (confirm with trial site).
  • People who have been confirmed by tissue or cell testing to have HER2-positive breast cancer in the original tumour site.
  • People whose primary breast tumour is larger than 2 cm, or who have cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes under the arm.
  • People whose blood test results meet specific required levels for immune cells, platelets, red blood cells, liver function, kidney function, and other markers — the trial site will check these in detail.
  • People whose blood clotting test results are within the required range, and who are not on blood-thinning medication (confirm with trial site).
  • People whose urine protein levels are within acceptable limits as tested at screening.
  • People whose thyroid hormone levels and heart pumping function (measured by a scan) meet the required thresholds.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People whose breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body (Stage IV), or whose cancer is not able to be removed by surgery after pre-surgery treatment, as assessed by the medical team.
  • People who have previously received chemotherapy, hormone therapy, anti-HER2 treatments, or breast surgery for their cancer (excluding a diagnostic biopsy of the primary breast cancer).
  • People who have been diagnosed with another cancer within the past 3 years, or who currently have another cancer — though some exceptions may apply for certain cancers that were fully treated by surgery with no recurrence for 5 years, or for specific low-risk cancers such as cervical carcinoma in situ or non-melanoma skin cancer (confirm with trial site).
  • People who have had major surgery, a surgical biopsy (other than a diagnostic biopsy of the primary breast cancer), or a serious injury within 28 days before starting study treatment.
  • People who have wounds or fractures that have not healed.
  • People with a history of uncontrolled use of substances affecting the mind, or uncontrolled psychiatric conditions.
  • People with uncontrolled high blood pressure (above certain levels even after treatment) or a history of hypertensive crisis or hypertensive brain complications.
  • People with confirmed heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
  • People with certain levels of heart-related conditions such as reduced blood flow to the heart, a previous heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm, or moderate-to-severe heart failure.
  • People with chest pain (angina) that requires ongoing medication to manage.
  • People with serious lung problems, active lung disease, or a severe active infection that is not under control.
  • People who are allergic to any ingredient in the study drugs being tested.
  • People whose other health conditions may put their safety at risk or affect their ability to complete the study, as determined by the medical team.
