Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older and fall into at least one of the following five groups:
  • Group 1: You have tested positive for hepatitis B (but not HIV), you have not yet started treatment (or stopped treatment more than 1 year ago and have taken it for no more than 7 days recently), and your doctor considers you suitable for a tenofovir-based medication
  • Group 2: You have tested positive for hepatitis B (but not HIV), you recently developed symptoms of hepatitis, and your liver enzyme levels are significantly elevated (more than 10 times the normal level)
  • Group 3: You have both hepatitis B and HIV, you have not yet started treatment (or stopped more than 1 year ago and have taken it for no more than 7 days recently), and your doctor considers you suitable for a tenofovir-based medication
  • Group 4: You have both hepatitis B and HIV, you have been on tenofovir-based treatment for at least 4 years, and you are still testing positive for hepatitis B
  • Group 5: You have a confirmed history of chronic hepatitis B (shown by two tests taken 6 months apart), but you now test negative for the hepatitis B surface antigen — whether or not you have HIV

Who may not be able to join:

  • You also have hepatitis C, confirmed by both an antibody test and a virus-detection test
  • You are currently pregnant or have been pregnant in the past 6 weeks
  • You have severe liver disease (advanced cirrhosis) that is detectable during a physical examination
  • You are unlikely to be able to stay in Lusaka for the full length of the study
