Who may be able to join

  • Women aged 18 years or older.
  • People with breast cancer at a clinical stage classified as T1–T4, N1–N3, M0 (meaning the cancer may vary in size and has spread to nearby lymph nodes, but not to distant parts of the body).
  • People whose cancer has spread to the lymph nodes under the arm, confirmed by a needle biopsy or fine-needle sampling.
  • People for whom a standard course of chemotherapy given before surgery (called neoadjuvant chemotherapy) has been recommended and planned.
  • People whose affected lymph node can be clearly seen on ultrasound and is suitable for having a small marker clip placed inside it.
  • People who have completed pre-surgery chemotherapy followed by breast surgery and removal of underarm lymph nodes, with full pathology results available.
  • People who have had specialised ultrasound monitoring during their chemotherapy, including standard ultrasound, elastography, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
  • People who have signed a consent form and are willing to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have cancer in both breasts.
  • People who are not suitable for pre-surgery chemotherapy, or whose treatment plan involves only hormone therapy or targeted therapy (not chemotherapy).
  • People who have previously had breast or underarm surgery, chemotherapy, or other treatments that could affect how the current treatment is assessed.
  • People whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, or where extensive spread under the arm makes placing the marker clip or assessing the lymph node difficult.
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • People whose ultrasound or other scan images are of poor quality.
  • People who are unable to give informed consent due to psychological, family, or social circumstances.
