Who may be able to join
- People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder by two separate psychiatrists, using a standard set of medical guidelines called the DSM-5.
- People whose depression symptoms score above 20 on a standard rating scale called the HAMD-24, measured at the start of the trial.
- People who are between 18 and 65 years old.
- People who are right-handed.
- People who are able to understand what the study involves and are willing to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part.
Who may not be able to join

- People who have a history of epilepsy, a brain tumour, or a brain injury.
- People who have received certain brain stimulation treatments — including transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial electrical stimulation, or electroconvulsive therapy — in the past 3 months.
- People who have metal implants in their body, or any other reason that would make brain stimulation treatments or MRI scans unsafe for them.
- People who are currently experiencing serious or urgent thoughts of suicide.
- People who have any other condition that the trial investigators consider would make it unsafe or unsuitable for them to take part.
