Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have cirrhosis (severe liver scarring) that has caused serious complications, such as internal bleeding related to liver pressure, episodes of confusion caused by liver disease, or fluid build-up in the abdomen
- People whose liver disease is rated as moderately severe or worse, based on standard medical scoring systems used by doctors (MELD 3.0 score of 15 or higher, or Child Pugh Class B or C)
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who are already receiving ongoing care at the liver (hepatology) clinics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center or the University of Texas Southwestern
- People who are willing to follow the study plan and attend required visits
- People who are able to give written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had, or currently have, certain heart conditions — including blocked heart arteries, significant heart valve problems, more than mild fluid around the heart, a protein build-up disorder affecting the heart (cardiac amyloidosis), a heart defect present from birth, a pacemaker, or an implanted heart device to correct dangerous heart rhythms
- People who have end-stage (very advanced) heart, kidney, or lung disease
- People who have high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs (pulmonary arterial hypertension)
- People experiencing a serious sudden worsening of their liver disease that is also causing two or more other organs in the body to fail at the same time (confirm with trial site)
- People with advanced liver cancer rated at a late stage using a standard liver cancer staging system (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer Stage C or D)
- People who are currently drinking alcohol, based on what they report or on a blood test that detects recent alcohol use
- People who are pregnant
- People who have previously had a procedure called a TIPS (a type of internal shunt placed in the liver to manage complications)
