Who may be able to join
For people with Treatment-Resistant Depression:
- Adults aged between 18 and 55 years (male or female)
- People who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (a formal diagnosis of serious, ongoing depression)
- People whose depression has not responded well to at least two different antidepressant medications, taken at appropriate doses for an appropriate length of time
- People whose treating doctor determines them suitable for a brain stimulation treatment called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form
- People who are able to complete thinking and memory tests as part of the study
- People who are able to attend all study appointments and complete the full treatment program
For people joining as a Healthy Control (comparison group):
- Adults aged between 18 and 55 years (male or female)
- People who do not currently have any diagnosed psychiatric condition
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form
- People who are able to complete thinking and memory tests as part of the study
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, organic mental disorders, or other major psychiatric conditions
- People with a history of epilepsy, a brain tumour, severe head injury, or a significant neurological condition
- People for whom TMS treatment is medically unsuitable for any reason
- People who have metal implants inside the skull, a cardiac pacemaker, cochlear implants, or other implanted devices that are not compatible with TMS
- People who currently have an active infection
- People who have an autoimmune disease or a long-term inflammatory condition
- People who have had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), deep brain stimulation, or vagus nerve stimulation within the past 5 years
- People who have previously received ketamine treatment given through a drip (intravenous) or nasal spray (intranasal)
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who currently have an alcohol or substance use disorder
- People who would be unable to follow the study procedures
- People who are unable to tolerate the specific type of TMS used in this study (called iTBS) (confirm with trial site)
- People who withdraw their consent to participate at any point during the study
