  • People who are scheduled to have a planned (non-emergency) gynaecological surgery at a participating centre that is able to offer virtual reality.
  • People who are able and willing to give their written agreement to take part in the study, be randomly assigned to a group, and use virtual reality.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have a higher chance of bad reactions to virtual reality, such as strong motion sickness, claustrophobia, or a type of epilepsy triggered by flashing lights or patterns.
  • People who currently have a substance use disorder, or who are currently misusing alcohol or illegal drugs.
  • People who have severe ongoing (chronic) pain and/or who regularly take opioid pain medicines before surgery, as defined by the study's guidelines (confirm with trial site).
