Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who had normal hearing at some point in their life before losing it, and now have severe to profound hearing loss in the ear(s) that received the implant
- People who have had a CT scan of their cochlear implant electrode after surgery, with the scan results available
- People who have been fitted with a MED-EL brand cochlear implant
- People whose implant uses a Flex28, FlexSoft, or Standard electrode (specific implant part types)
- People who use a SONNET 2 or RONDO 3 sound processor (the external device worn with the implant)
- People who have been using their cochlear implant for at least 6 months
- People whose implant electrode has been inserted deeply enough into the inner ear — specifically, reaching at least 540 degrees of the spiral shape inside the ear (confirm with trial site)
- People who have at least 10 active sound channels switched on in their implant
- People who wear a hearing aid in the opposite ear to the implant, and that hearing aid is properly fitted
- People who are fluent in the language used at the trial centre
- People who have signed and dated a consent form before any trial procedures begin
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not meet all of the inclusion criteria listed above
- People implanted with older MED-EL implant models known as C40+, C40X, or C40C
- People who have an Auditory Brainstem Implant (a different type of hearing implant that connects to the brainstem rather than the inner ear) or a Split electrode array
- People where, in the opinion of the investigating doctor, participation would put them at greater risk or prevent them from completing the trial fully
