Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who developed significant hearing loss in one ear after they had already learned to speak and understand language
- People whose other (non-implanted) ear has very good hearing, with hearing levels better than 30 dB (a measure used by audiologists to assess hearing ability)
- People who have had a CT scan of their cochlear implant after surgery, and those results are available
- People who have been fitted with a cochlear implant made by the company MED-EL
- People whose implant uses one of these specific electrode types: Flex20, Flex24, Flex28, FlexSoft, Flex34, or Standard
- People who are scheduled to receive a SONNET 2, SONNET 3, or RONDO 3 sound processor on the newly implanted side
- People who have recently received their cochlear implant for the first time
- People whose implant has been inserted deeply enough into the inner ear to meet a specific technical requirement (confirm with trial site)
- People whose implant has at least 10 working electrode contacts that can be used
- People who are fluent in the language used at the trial centre
- People who have signed and dated a consent form before any study procedures begin
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not meet all of the inclusion criteria listed above
- People implanted with older MED-EL implant models known as C40+, C40X, or C40C
- People who have received a different type of implant called an Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) or a Split electrode array
- People who, in the opinion of the doctor running the trial, may be at greater risk of harm or may not be able to fully complete the study for any reason
